If you’ve decided to redirect your blog URL to a new URL in blogger and you’ve a considerable amount of traffic mounting to your blog, a small mistake in redirecting the blog can demote your blog on search engine index. Even though, blogger is very limited in providing tools to bloggers, thankfully we have Redirect option in blogger which can help us to avoid mistakes while redirecting the blog.
Redirect the URL of the blog post in Blogger
- On your Blog dashboard, go to Settings > Search Preferences > Errors and redirections > Custom Redirects and Click Edit
- In the options for Custom Redirects, write down
From: the old blog post that needs a redirect
To: the new blog post name that the old blog post needs to be redirected to - Click Save and Save Changes
Important Notes:
- Please ensure that you do not input the whole url in the From: and To: sections. The part of the url following blogspot.com/ should be entered only.
- This method is for redirecting one blog post url to another blog post url in Blogger only. If you need to redirect your blog url to any other site or custom domain you bought recently, this method is not applicable in that case.
- Permanent Redirect: 301: It means that you want to permanently redirect your blog url to another blog url. Check this option if you want to do so with your redirection. This is perfect in those situations when you’ve moved your website or blog to another site or domain and you do not want your traffic to go to your old url anymore.
- Temporary Redirect: 302: It, as the name suggests, will temporary redirect the url. Do not check the Permanent checkbox if you need to do temporary redirect. It is ideal in those situations when there is a maintenance of the website or blog is on and you do not want your traffic to see 404 pages. It is normally not recommended to use 302 Redirect as it hurts google rankings. Google indexes both the temporary new url and old url which eventually divides the traffic. This redirect is also shady in other search engines so it is prefered to avoid it as much as possible.
